R.I.P. Chuck Brown, "Godfather of Go-Go"

The Washington Post reports that Chuck Brown, the guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer credited widely as "The Godfather of Go-Go," died today due to complications from pneumonia. He was 75.

In the 1970s, Brown developed a style of funk music known as go-go. As The Post writes, it "soundtracked life in black Washington for more than three decades." Chuck Brown was the scene's leader and most visible participant, inspiring groups like Trouble Funk and Rare Essence.

Brown's group, Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers, had a national hit in 1978 with "Bustin' Loose", which topped the R&B singles chart and was later taken on as a home-run anthem for the city's baseball team, the Washington Nationals. Nelly's song "Hot in Herre" was built off of a sample of "Bustin' Loose". In 2009, the city of Washington named a street after him: Chuck Brown Way.

The impact and origins of go-go in Washington, D.C. were documented in the June 1985 issue of SPIN, available to read here at GoogleBooks.

Here We Go Magic Pick Up Hitchhiking John Waters

Photo via Here We Go Magic bassist Jen Turner's Twitter

In a recent interview, legendary oddball filmmaker and writer John Waters (Hairspray, Pink Flamingos) said, "I still do hitchhike-- it's a great way to meet people, and to have sex." And it's a nice way to become acquainted with indie rock bands, apparently.

Brooklyn act Here We Go Magic recently randomly picked up Waters in Western Pennsylvania, during a hitchhiking trip from Baltimore to... who knows where.

Guitarist Michael Bloch explained:

There's a hydro-fracking boom in western Pennsylvania. You can't get a motel room. We had to drive til 4AM, and finally found a Days Inn in eastern Ohio. Getting back on the highway this morning, there was a man at the side of the on-ramp with a sign that read "to the end of Rte 70." Jen [Turner, bassist] wanted to pick him up, but we drove past him. As we passed by, our sound guy said "John Waters." Luke said, "Yep, definitely John Waters." We got off at the next exit and circled back. He was still there. We pulled up, opened the door and asked where he was coming from. "Baltimore," he said. And we said "Get in, sir."

Lesson of the day: Don't listen to what your parents told you about the dangers of hitchhiking or picking up hitchhikers.

Review: Documentary Film Hit So Hard: The Life & Near Death Story of Patty Schemel

"Why Patty Schemel?" you might wonder towards the beginning of Hit So Hard, P. David Ebersole's recent documentary chronicling the heyday of grunge via Hole's relatively un-famous drummer (which is now playing in limited release). More recognizable faces flit through the film: Here's a shirtless Kurt Cobain, in some charming home-movie footage, looking like an overgrown baby as he sits with Francis Bean in her crib; there's Courtney Love backstage on the Live Through This tour destroying a birthday cake with her bare hands; there's even a snippet of Nardwuar interviewing Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson's then-girlfriend Drew Barrymore, who declares, "My memoirs are stored in Patty Schemel's uterus." Which of course is a sentence that prompts all sorts of questions-- not the least of which being, once again: why Patty Schemel?

For one thing, it provides you with one more name for the next time a camera crew asks you to reel off some female rock drummers; over the closing credits, a montage shows talking heads doing their best at that very task, and we get a lot of "Moe Tucker"s, a couple of "Gina Schock"s, and a few blank stares. One of the great services of Ebersole's film is that it assembles a formidable group of female drum legends-- including the Go-Go's Schock, the Bangles' Debbi Peterson, and Fanny's Alice de Buhr-- to reflect not just on Schemel's volcanic technique, but on the cultural myths that have long kept young women from getting behind the kit. Most of them agree the idea of brute strength being a drummer's greatest asset is prohibitive and widely exaggerated. "It's not like you're playing with tree trunks," says former Beastie Boys drummer Kate Schellenbach. "Just some sticks that weigh a few ounces each."

Professionally, Schemel's unwavering beats grounded Courtney Love's antics and sonic anarchy; personally, she was a calming presence in the wake of the two drug-related deaths that surrounded the release of Hole's breakout 1994 album Live Through This: her close friend Kurt, and then just two months later, her bandmate Kristen Pfaff, both at age 27. On stage and off, Schemel held everything together as chaos swirled-- until she too spiraled into addiction in her 27th year. Predictably, the band's center did not hold.

Schemel stuck with Hole a few more years, though, before weathering a final pride-crushing blow. Michael Beinhorn, the demanding producer of Hole's 1998 album Celebrity Skin, had her bumped from the record and brought in a session guy who used to play with Whitesnake (Schemel, with a comedic sneer, dubs him "Johnny One-Take"). Some of the fellow female drummers interviewed see it as a classic tale of music-industry sexism, while others see it as symptomatic of the stereotype that the drummer is the most disposable member of a band. Which seemed to be an unfortunately persistent recurring theme in Hole. "I don't even remember who played drums on [Pretty on the Inside]," Love muses nonchalantly, munching on a cookie. (For the record, it was Caroline Rue.)

Although it's not the definitive story of the brief, odd cultural moment when Hole was one of the biggest rock bands in the world (an early clip shows Schemel on tour in a hotel room, reading off the winners of all the categories in Rolling Stone's 1994 year-end poll: "Hole, Hole, Hole..."), Hit So Hard is something rare and refreshing: a rock documentary that sees beyond the cult of underground celebrity and instead shines its spotlight on an unsung member of the band. And Schemel-- now six years clean and sober-- proves to be an uncommonly clear-headed, affable, and-- above all things-- funny narrator of her own life.

Report: Beach House Live in New York

Photos by Erez Avissar. Head to our Facebook for more photos.

Last month, writing about the single "Lazuli" from Beach House's just-released album Bloom, Pitchfork's Jayson Greene likened the group's approach to a Rothko painting. "Glowing and benevolent," he noted, "It's gratifying just to be near it." If ever the comparison held true, it was last night during Beach House's encore at the Bowery Ballroom in New York.

At the center of a dark stage, Victoria Legrand stood clad in a multicolor, impressionist blouse, a single, striking stage light beaming from behind, as she, Alex Scally, and drummer Daniel Franz applied the grandeur of Bloom to its closing track "Irene" and the Teen Dream cut "10 Mile Stereo". It marked the end of an intense set that was highlighted by rich takes on Bloom's "Myth" and "Other People", as well as Devotion's "Gila" and "Turtle Island".

Beach House have learned to transcend the stage with a towering live dynamic, accentuated all the more last night by a pair of wooden windmills in the background of the stage set, revolving at a slow, surreal pace. Beach House once offered songs to fall asleep to; they now aim for the sublime with touches of subtle, artful terror. As Legrand drove herself into her keyboard, it felt patently fierce.

Setlist:

Wild
Walk in the Park
Norway
Other People
Lazuli
Gila
Equal Mind
The Hours
Silver Soul
New Year
Zebra
Wishes
Take Care
Myth

Encore:

Turtle Island
10 Mile Stereo
Irene

Beach House tour North America and Europe through July, including a stop at the Pitchfork Music Festival on Sunday, July 15. Single day tickets are on sale here.

New Yeasayer: "Henrietta"

A cryptic image. A nonsensical Tweet. Yes, in 2012, that means it's time for a band to release a new song, and this time around it happens to be Yeasayer, who are touring next month but have remained fairly quiet since 2010's Odd Blood. According to We All Want Someone to Shout For, physical CDs of "Henrietta" were sent to fans on the band's mailing list, and now the song has surfaced online. Third Man Selling "Triple Decker" Jack White Poster

In its unending quest to perpetually outdo itself, Third Man Records is this week offering a new "Triple Decker" Jack White poster, created, designed and printed by Matthew Jacobson and Bryce McCloud. When the project's three individual posters-- black, white, and blue-- are layered on top of one another, they create an image of Jack's face. (See the result here.) It's "kind of a 'fourth wall' inter-dimension type thing," according to the label's website.

The black poster is letterpressed, with images of "a peacock and vulture egg," while the other two are lasercut. The white poster features Jack's autograph.

In order to collect them all, you'll have to venture to Nashville. The white and blue posters will be available at the Ryman Auditorium, where Jack performs tonight and tomorrow, in a limited edition of 75 each per show. The black poster will be available exclusively at Third Man, also today and tomorrow beginning at 3 p.m., and also in a limited edition of 75 for each day.

Watch a short video on the making of the posters directed by Leigh Jurecka:
