The Living Archive of Cassette Underground Music
815 visitors

On this site I will attempt to give you a personal overview of underground, independent, and home recorded music. I will not try to give a complete chronological survey of what happened during the "golden years" of cassette culture (approx. 1980-1995) but will introduce you to various characters and sounds I have been exposed to during that period. I will enlist others to give their own experiences and I will have plenty of links to investigate.

Here we will follow the course of my radio show "No Pigeonholes" which has aired home produced music since 1985.We will also spotlight certain artists, review and discuss music and the cassette culture community of the time.

There is certainly an American slant to my perspective but I will try to make up for that as time goes along and I get my European friends to chip in with their thoughts. To begin with you can check the "Outside The USA" link to the above right.

This is called The Living Archive of Underground Music because it will never be complete. I will add to it as I can and welcome anything you'd like to bring to it. The updates will come as often as possible although I will try to update the "News" section monthly. I will not constantly be bombarding your email boxes with update information, perhaps monthly if you want to be on the mailing list. Just check back when you feel like it, there will probably be new additions often.

Although this project is mainly about remembrances of things past and connections between individuals, I will also ponder how we can move into the future with the community spirit that was cassette culture. Many or most of the artists mentioned here are still active and those activities will be fair game for discussion over time.

Whatever you call it: home tapers, indie, underground, DIY, cassette culture, you will find it here. You can begin your journey by clicking on a link to the upper left.

Of course, I will probably forget many crucial contributors to this narrow but important musical and social network but if you have any thoughts, would like to send information or even write a feature please let me know.
