Drums and Mics

Hello All -   My question today may be a little dumb, but I'm not a drummer and never really recorded drummers before.  Anyway, my question is:   If studios mic up most of the drums individually in recording sessions, what are room and overhead mics used for?  I don't get what a room and overhead mic does for a drum sound if they are already individually miced up? Ambiance?  Cymbals? Reverbation?  Thanks everyone who replies  :)

Just got AT2020 ... wondering if i should take it back...

I was using a shure sm58 / going into a tascam casette player / going into my 1/8" sound card on my laptop.

Yesturday I purchased the M-Audio MobilePre (1st generation) on craigslist for $40. And then I purchased the AT2020 brand new at a music store for $99.  I went home and tried it out and it sounds good, but not quite as good as the sm58 going into the crappy casette player.  Also, for some reason it sounds better in my normal bedroom than my carpet insulated closet.

Is this due to my cheap M-Audio PreAmp? or due to the cheapness of the at2020... seems like everywhere I looked AT2020 is better for vocals than the sm58, so it seems like I should notice an increase.

Sidenote: I am doing rap vocals. also some folky stuff on the side.

Please let me know, I only have 24 hours to return the condensor mic.

Why is my condenser mic so quiet on my iMac?

I am new to recording with an external mic so I will try to explain my situation as well as possible...

I have a MXL 990 microphone going to a 48v phantom power supply, which is going out xlr, transitions to a quarter inch and then I have a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter so it can plug in to my iMac. My iMac is 10.6.8. I use garage band when recording.

Here is my problem:

When I test the mic in the system preferences the output is very low. For example there are 16 bars to indicate the recording-level volume. If I just talk in to the mic in a normal voice, it only goes up 2-3 bars. If I talk very loud, it rises 6-8 bars.

In Garage Band the same problem goes on. The playback is super quiet. I would have to have 10 speakers blaring ACDC to get this puppy even close to redlining.

Please help,

Ryan

Searching for good budget preamp

Hi there.

I'm an aspiring death metal vocalist (false cord) who is without any equipment. While I may know the fronts and backs of doing harsh vocals, I'm almost entirely clueless when it comes to recording.

After a bit of extensive online searching, I've decided that the SM58 was good for my style and for my budget ($500, with some leeway if need be). All I need is a preamp, but I've seen some cost in the thousands, which really scares me when I'm looking at preamps. Although, I've found some that people claim to be good, especially for their price. I'm particularly interested in the ART Pro MPAII Microphone Preamp, the M-Audio Fast Track USB Audio Recording Interface, or the PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Microphone Preamp.

If you have any recommendations for me that suit my budget, I thank you in advance. Bear with me here - I'm a recording newbie.

How can I mix a metal track to sound like Killswitch Engage

Hi all,

My questions quite simple but needs a slightly long winded answer.

I've recorded the guitars and bass for a metal track and i was wondering how to get a decent sound from the overall track. by that i mean, how to use certain feautres.

For example, what are the main processes i will need to use and what do they do to the track. I know what sound im looking for (aim for something like Killswitch Engage, obviously not gonna get near that but its a heading point) i just dont know where to start in getting that sound.

Recording Rap Vocals - SM 58 - into 1/8" ?

I am beginning to record rap vocals.  I have a shure sm58 and I plug it into an older Tascam 4 track, then use the line out stereo to 1/8" In my laptop sound card.  Would i be better off puchasing a shure x2u so I can go straight to USB and skip my sound card?  I get reletively decent sounds through the tascam... I just want to get the most out of my sm58.  Thanks

Making audio travel from right to left

I just want to know... how can we make sound or AUDIO travel from left to right stereo... or right to left stereo... This is an added effect you can observe with major recordings.... Example A guitar tune travels from your left ear to right ear while you are listening to it through your headphones ?

Presonus Firestudio Project and ASIO4ALL Buffer Size in Pro Tools 10.

Since I've upgraded to Pro Tools 10, I seem to be having a problem with the hardware buffer sizes in Pro Tools along with the ASIO4ALL driver. If I set a buffer size in Pro Tools to say, 1024 samples, ASIO4ALL won't match this buffer size and instead set itself to 512 samples. The buffer size in the Presonus Universal Control for my Firestudio Project won't change at all either. In other words, the buffer sizes across Pro Tools, ASIO4ALL and the Presonus Universal Control, are all different and not matching the same buffer size. Things were fine in Pro Tools 9, and this has only occured since upgrading to Pro Tools 10. I've tried downgrading to Pro Tools 9, but this is still happening. Has anyone else had this issue?
