Amanita Music‘s Joseph Benzola is an independent multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer living in New York. He does not conform to one discipline, idiom, or theory, but embraces all types of musics and playing philosophies.

Areknuteketyrne recordings are full of all the stuff that made cassette culture recordings wildly fun in the mid-80’s; munchkin vocals, a disorienting array of musical styles, cut-up French vocal intros, found sound inserts, loud punk songs to bedroom acoustic guitar greatness.

Last Year’s Arthur Loves Plastic release, Second Avenue Detour, won the Washington Area Music award for best Techno/ Ambient/Electronic/Industrial recording. This year’s follow-up, Fixed Star, departs from the ambient haunt of Detour by embracing the thrill of the dancefloor. Lisa Moscatiello’s powerful, soaring vocals showcase ALP’s pop flair. Shimmering, intricate arrangements flaunt influences ranging from House to UK Garage.

Aural Beautification Campaign, is a one-person studio band, consisting of John Neumann and an occasional guest (on this CD, synthesizer guru Chris Terpin). “trees tracks and power lines” is a collection of songs recorded between 1989 and 1999 encompassing a range of styles, from the guitar rock of “Pale Winter” to the pleasant ambient impressionism of “Lawns” and “Fortunes in Formulas,” to the mellow guitar folk of “Across the Distance.” Aural Beautification Campaign strives to create an aural tapestry in which the natural and man-made worlds coexist in an organic alloy. Influences are YES, Stravisnsky, Cocteau Twins, Jane Siberry, and King Crimson. 

John T. Baker is a longtime favorite of many, Baker is back in his home studio creating the kind of superb modern pop songs that leap out and grab you. His new CD adds even more harmonies, layered arrangements and should be exactly what his fans have been waiting for since Paddleboat took the DiY world by storm.

The solo recordings of Norwegian artist Anton Balsam (Areknutekynterne) are full of invention, great songwriting, and fun.

BaneemyOften compared to the Residents, with songs which skirt the edge. Baneemy is the work of two artists who wish to remain anonymous. Their work traverses song styles, mixing experimental recording with traditional fare to reveal a body of work that is no less than amazing. 

Bat Lenny has been brewing their brand of Mutant Pop since the Big Bang of Home Taping in 1982. By blending Murky Jollity and Dim Diversion, they escort the listener from dark land and spacescapes through giddy cartoon psychedelia and back again.

Black Rider Records is home to founder Robert Lurie’s solo material as well as other projects, including the recent David Bowie tribute compilation CD. Lurie’s “you speak in too many voices” CD is a favorite of many reviewers for it’s personal voice and unique sound.

Blind Mime Ensemble — gajoob.com’s Bryan Baker does, in fact, do the home recording thing. Doris Gets Her Oats collects some of Blind Mime Ensemble’s best 4-track recordings, while Rain Come Down is Bryan’s first release in many years.

Book of Kills — Jim Shelley has been releasing home produced music since 1989. In the ten years since his first album BLOOM OR DIE, Jim has been a. . . shall we say. . . prolific artist, having written and recorded over 250 songs and issued more than 25 tapes and CDs. Jim’s recent releases include a full length CD, A STEP IN EVERY DIRECTION, and a subsequent nine track CD single, IF I SHOULD FALL, last year.

bycehaus is made by jim byce, in his house that’s why the name. the music is a cross of funk, depressing mood music and strange pop music. each song is diferent, “…kinda my therapy.”

Rob Christensen is a (one man band) recording artist / singer / songwriter in the indie rock / folk / pop vein. Think R.E.M. crossed with Neil Young. Rob has been self-releasing his records since 1994.

CLOUD — Michael J. Bowman has long been favorite here at gajoob, having appeared on our first compilation tape ten years ago and now branching into new directions with his new instrumental psychpop project CLOUD. Bowman brings a freshness to every recording that is so infectious it’s addictive.

Dark Day — No-Wave originator / performance artist and co-founder of DNA, Robin Crutchfield, continues his work here. Dark Day makes moody, multi-rhythmic, multi-layered, multi-textural, cyclical music on an unusual variety of instruments painting odd beats with sinister undertones.

DATURA 1.0‘s false consiousness construct performed in Punk/Noise Industrial bands in Minneapolis throughout the 80’s, early 90’s then stopped making music to pursue ceremonial magick. The construct decided to discontinue this and return to music to delve into digital sound construction several years ago. The construct is now interested in the visionary and consiousness changing aspects of sound.

Dixon DeVore II — CRICKET POWER RECORDS and composer/writer Dixon DeVore join together to bring children’ s music and stories to audiences worldwide. These musical stories not only delight young children but teach them valuable lessons and morals as well.

Dogs Gone Fishing is the alternative pop/rock vehicle for guitarist/composer Doug Kolmar. Cool understated guitar-driven textures and wry lyrics are DGF trademarks.

Electronic Cow Recordings releases and distributes lesser known independent music to the masses, recognizing musicians for their creativity and not solely for their commercialism.

Evol Egg Nart Recordings Miami based micro label EVOL EGG NART has been supplying homemade music fans with high grade lo-fi since 1996.

Bob Frehley , Party Host For Life, PLAYS stoned Whitetrash Afro Pimp “Rap-n-Roll commin’ up from Bob Frehley, so shake the little booty , suck it all in it’s time to get groovy!” PARTY MUSIC FOR PARTY PEOPLE! 

General Ludd Music is opposed to the replacement of human musicianship with machine musicianship. It is not opposed to technology in and of itself, but argues that technology must remain subordinate to humanity, not vice versa. General Ludd Music offers only handmade music.

Michael William Gilbert grew up in Connecticut and Brussels, Belgium. It was while living in Europe that he first encountered the music of Varese and Pierre Henry, as well as the musics of India, Africa, and Japan. After studying electrical engineering at MIT, he continued studies in music at the Boston School of Electronic Music, where he later worked as a teacher and designer of custom synthesis systems. He graduated with a degree in music from Hampshire College and shortly thereafter became the technical director of electronic music at Amherst College, Smith College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He has taught at the University of Massachusetts, and remains a consultant to the studios at UMASS 

Glass Cage , is Stylistically somewhere between indy/soft rock, with classical influences and just a touch of “World Music” in parts. Almost a concept Album, the song’s lyrics question the way we perceive ourselves and who we are and the indentities and roles that are imposed upon us. And also the fact that often the longer we live, the less we really seem to understand about anything.

Mark Grayson is the drummer for Tequila Douche, Santa Cruz; KOME drum competition at The Keystone in Berkeley; MFA, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1988; Grey Sounds: Let Chaos In, 1998; Alphonse Grayson’s Sock-Hop and Deluge, 2001. 

T. Griffin creates hushed, intense story songs with a junk store electronic vibe. His CD, TORTUGA has been called “the best late night companion this side of Tom Waits’ Mule Variations.” (Jim Walsh, st paul pioneer press 11/12/99) Griffin is based in New York City.

Harsh Reality Music has been trying to bring you the best in experimental electronic music since 1984. Bucketloads of cassette tapes are available. Experimental electronics, space rock, industrial, ambient, avant-garde, power electronics & much more.

Bret Hart is well known in hometaper circles. The breadth of his work is as breathtaking as conversations with the man, teaming with influences, experiences. His music explores like few other exceptional artists have and we’re extremely proud to offer just one of the stepping stones on his path. Enjoy this folks, it is a true find and treasure.

Jack Kettle Records — Ambient/Pop music from J Mundok, Psychedelic Dub from Jesters Longevity & Superdragon DJ, Folk music from Chris Osburn and much more. JKr is a DIY micro-label centered around music coming from and around Studio Frog and Moonrock Portable Studios.

The Land of Guilt & Blarney , is the studio project of Carl Howard, Syntheiszer player in the space rock band, Born to Go, 1998-present; Co-founder of electronic music band, The Land of Guilt & Blarney, 1992-present; Member of Alien Planetscapes, 1987-1989; Maintained solo project, NOMUZIC, 1985-mid 1990s. Offered audiofile Tapes distribution catalog, 1984-1999; Offering audiofile Round Tapes, original CDRs, since 1999; Published ARTITUDE/audiofile magazine, neo-paleolithic period of mid 1980s.

Denny Lira decided to commit to music a couple of years ago, “… and the only regrets I have is that I didn’t do it sooner.” 

Marijuana Motor Company, Dedicated to stoners around the world and especially to those who have given their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honors.

Kent McDaniel has played in most every kind of band, and has appeared everywhere from The Last Stop Tavern in Massac County, Kentucky, to The Other End in New York City. Currently he and his wife and friends appear around Chicago in acoustic venues, where they mix styles and instrumentation with abandon. 

The Misty Hill Band — Bluegrass is Misty Hill’s foundation, with folk, rocknroll, blues and country playing a very big part, born from the natural feelings of home pride and good old famly living in small town life. 

Mixmasters, is a newsgroup frequented by project studio recording artists who last year assembled an excellent compilation of material showcasing recording techniques and the songs which resulted.

Murder Capital Allstars — Heavy guitars, electronic beats and noises along with a little vocal aggravation.

Neo Pseudo — Tribal Folk Rock Jazz music for singing and dancing around campfires both organic and electronic.

The Offramps — Michael Futreal’s home-based recordings resulted in the release of a CD found here at Homemade Music which is a thoroughly captivating mix of acoustic folk, bluegrass, and blues with a modern edge that is wonderfully unique.

Okapi Guitars — This two-man band features African-pop music that combines a progressive sort of jazzy reggae/island pop with lots of shimmering guitars, clean melodies, dancing counterpoint and rock solid beats.

James Richard Oliver is rock n’ roll’s psychotic hillbilly from georgia. Former guitarist for a country punk band named The Boonies. Plays a mix of original punkabilly-country-rock n’ roll songs with titles like “Beer Gut”, “Kiss Destroyer”, “She’s a Burnout”, “Juicehead Cracker” etc.

orange entropy records is a collective of underground home-tapers and the like, always expanding… featuring the whirlwind artistry of home-recording non-legends as Duf Davis, the Great Glass Elevator, Belladonna Bouquet and Nudge Squidfish.

ORSI — In the dark confines of a basement in Indiana, ORSI blends and mixes samples, beats and dark vocals. By adding a variety of musical sensibilities to the mix, ORSI commands a listener’s attention from the very start.

Paragon Null is a musical outfit on the bleeding-edge of the electronic music scene. Seemless blending of samples, loops, and programming.

Kevin Pike’s music is a fusion of jazz, funk, world, experimental and pop. His arrangements feature traditional and non-traditional instrumentation, including saxophone, piano, Chinese flutes, EWI (electronic wind instrument), household percussion and combinations such as sax through wah-wah pedal and heavy metal fife.

Daniel Prendiville – one-man operation. Combines electronic and electric music in a manner which belies the fact that he cannot actually play a musical instrument. Regarded by those who knows these things as “not being the worst…”

Radio Radio cranks out 60’s influenced pop songs and records them in a 21st century basement.

The Renovators — Need a change of view? Call The Renovators! Adjustments to the spirit? Installments of humor? Try The Renovators!! A new attic or front porch? RENOVATORS!!!! They have the tools. They know the styles.

Bill Retoff has been on the indie pop scene since the early 1990’s. His releases have received international acclaim. The music is clean guitar-driven pop, with melodic harmonies, upbeat vibes, great hooks, and introspective verse.

Donald Rubinstein‘s work is exceptionally diverse, including TV and film scores, theatre, and a wide range of recordings available on CD. Three of Rubinstein’s home-recorded releases are available here.

Singers/Songwriters Ray Johnson & Tom Wade, along with founding member and bassist Dave Bieritz, musically craft a unique blend of acoustic pop/ballads and blues. Two-part vocal arrangements are the cornerstone to this original group. Saldo Kreek is Ray Johnson 6 & 12 string acoustic guitar, Tom Wade harmonica and percussion and Dave Bieritz electric and acoustic bass.

Secret Archives of the Vatican have been producing some of gajoob’s favorite self-made recordings for many years. There music couples old-world music influences with modern techno, dub, electronic musics to form something totally new.

John Sheehan is a fulltime contemporary folk solo musician giging in the Tri-state area of N.J,N.Y,and PA.His two self-produced all original cds are being aired in the U.S, Sweden, Belgium, France, Uraguay, Ireland, Portugal and Australia. 

The Shorty Blackwells bring a whole lot of fun into their music which is a casual brew of guitar pop with loving nods to the Monkees.

Sindust is a one of the best unsigned hard/alternative bands in the country…the band flat out refuses to let you catch your breath when you listen to them or see them live…one moment, the band will show you how mellow songs are supposed to be written and played, the next moment will force to to jump out of your seat with some of the most aggressive and exciting songs ever written… 

A smooth production of jazz and instrumentals with a “backinthaday” groove, but with a true hip hop beat. The SliceofLifeGroup is Ted Rose on keyboards and programming featuring young, talented, up and coming guitarist Chris Morgan. Their motto is “it’s all about tha groove to make tha heads move.”

Kevin Slick has been releasing self-produced music since 1985 and offers half a dozen exceptional releases here at Homemade Music. His music ranges from jazz to instrumental eastern lullaby music, garnering rave reviews from all corners.

SlipstreamPresents.com is an Internet-based music company that features the work of a select group of independent recording artists. TechnoCamp combines “folkie” Jeffrey Lee Connelly with the more tech-oriented Jeff Anderson for music which expresses hope to harsh reality, with a good bit of fun besides!

Thelonious Octopus began recording ten years ago, utlizing tape and synthesizers and various sounds in a collage of sonic experiments. By exploring and expanding his horizons, Thelonious Octopus has been able to make a number of home recordings.

Twenty Eleven‘s Beef Humper began as a joke, really. The name itself was horrible on purpose. The first track (posted on mp3.com) was six seconds long and consisted of three badly-strummed guitar chords. It should have lasted a week, maybe two. Get a few laughs, annoy a few people, and then move along. But then something happened. The noisemaking mutated into a sort of “mongrelectronica”. People began writing, and telling me they liked what they heard. This inspired me to continue creating, releasing two EPs and a full-length CD (all now out-of-print) through mp3.com.

Jimmie R. Vestal is a songwriter and musician, the author of over 165 copyrighted songs and instrumentals. He plays lead, rhythm, and bass guitar, keyboard, harmonica, and percussion. he has performed professionally in musical groups in North Carolina and Florida. Jimmie’s 7-inch vinyl recording, “It’s Allright” is available at Homemade Music.

Begun as a hobby project in 1996 with a number of friends in volved, Vibrationland evolved into a serious endeavor. The very well-received CD “Dugong” 1999 (see Gajoob review) was recorded in a friend’s small 16 track ADAT studio.Home-recorded albums include “Squirts & Pushes” 1997, “Burly-Q” 1999 and the forthcoming “Brownian Motion” and “iamericanamerican” (both slated for 2000).

Dave Weisert is a music and fitness enthusiast. He blends weight lifting and aerobic workouts to music.

Zan Hoffman is a home recording artist and started the zidsic label in 1984 to distribute orginal recordings in trade internationally. extensive selection of collaborations, solo, group, and live recordings, plus a few compilations of home-recorded music. zanstones have been exploring the options with sounds + musics + noises + voices since 1983 and see no end in sight! we are most interested in collaborations, trading and live experimental audio art actions… get in contact, please.

Rotcod Zzaj is well known in the hometaping underground as publisher of Improvijazzation Nation, organzier of the Olympia Experimental Music Festival and founder of Zzaj Productions. Zzaj’s recordings feature dozens of collaboration projects with a immense variety of musicians. Homemade Music features one such excellent work with Ernesto Diaz Infante
